A domain name is a text description for an internet
protocol address. This form of addressing is much like a telephone book where a name is
assigned to a number. For example: John Doe 555-555-5555 tells you that you can reach John
Doe at that number. A domain name would work like this, when you type in www.planetc.com
in your internet browser a Domain Name Server (DNS) translates that into the Internet
Protocol (IP) address which is 207.65.96.29
A major difference between the two is that the phone
book is somewhat localized. As you are probably aware, the Internet is a world-wide
network, there is no localization. If your company name was, for example: Carparts Inc..,
there could be 50 companys around the world with that same company name. In some cases the
domain name that you would prefer to register such as carparts.com would already be taken.
In that case, you would want to select something different, something creative. In some
cases you can submit a form to Internic and get your domain name if you have certain
copyrights for that name but in most cases you are stuck with another name.
As mentioned in the previous information, Domain Names
are very scarce. If you plan to make a big impression on the World Wide Web and bring your
company into the 21st century, you will need a domain name. Domain names also give you the
ability to have e-mail addresses on the internet, specific to your company, for example
anything@companyname.com
